Leica Q2

Regular price

The Leica Q series was first introduced in 2015 with the Typ 116 model; a fixed lens full frame camera which was aimed primarily at the premium consumer market. This modern day ‘point and shoot’ camera, albeit with an optionally manual focussed lens, presented an entry point to an otherwise slightly daunting product range. We can think of the Q as a modern day Minilux, donning legendary Wetzlar manufactured optics on a simplified and very satisfyingly sturdy body. This second generation Q, aptly named the Q2 was released in March of 2019, offering double the sensor resolution, expanded focal distances and an increased battery capacity.

The Q2 offers much of what you might expect from a technical standpoint including, touch screen, bluetooth transferring and phone connectivity, 14 aperture stops of dynamic range teamed with a colour depth of 14bit. at full resolution you will be shooting at 46,7 megapixels (8368 x 5584 pixels) in a DNG raw format. The Q2 also offers full 4k video recording capabilities though, it’s lesser known for its use as a video shooter, we will admit.

As mentioned, this continuation of a category of high grade consumer products from Leica has finally hit its stride with the Q series. As the category developed in the 1990s, the 35mm offerings in the Minilux and the CM were all time great cameras, but as the digital age began there was a period of sub-par performance in this segment. As resolution and sensor technologies now are reaching unthinkable heights, this is one digital camera that can safely surf a period of time befitting its asking price, versus the usual rapid redundancy of consumer tech.
