LEITZ 80mm R f/1.4

Regular price

The Leitz 80mm Summilux-R f/1.4 was first produced in 1980, and through multiple iterations would conclude in 2009 after only around 12,250 units were produced; according to serial number databases. There is a complimentary term afforded to certain lenses that produce spectacular ‘bokeh’ (in layman’s terms, the blurred areas surrounding a focal point) which is the ‘king of bokeh.’ Many lenses have been given this crowning title, including the Canon ‘dream lens’ which offers an aperture of f/0.9 or even some 35mm Leitz M lenses have been equally blessed, but the Leitz Summilux-R f/1.4 is very deserving, if not more so than some. The manually focussed lens comprises 7 optical elements in 5 groups, in an aluminium body weighing 700 grams, with a built in retractable lens hood. Leica first described this lens as having minimal vignetting, moderate contrast, a uniform quality across the entire picture area and very good resolution of finer details. It is also described as having no unwanted reflections under bright light or highly contrasted conditions.

From first hand experience, the colour rendition and overall sharpness of this lens, even at f/1.4 is world class. In an era where lens character and feel is being slowly baked out of any modern production line, opting for an ‘add it later in post’ attitude, this lens offers something that will likely never be produced again; optical beauty above all else. That isn’t to say that this lens doesn’t perform on a technical level, because it absolutely does, it just to say that a modern day Nikon lens won’t bring you close to the character this king of bokeh can.
